In my mind, you cant get any better than those laid back summer days, having a laugh with your mates on a long board. While I have scored gnarly barrels around the world, nothing is more memorable, fun, or captures the spirit of surfing like a waist high summer ground swell, my 9' 6" and my mates in the line up.
The good thing about mates who ride your boards is that they are frank and honest. My classic shape, while had a glide and worked well, it was asked if there was some way to paddle faster, yet turn better. Also, for the serious long boarder, a Mini-mal that hooked up better.
so we now have a modern classic. added thickness through the foil, further forward. A longer rather than deeper concave (Thanks to Dean Geraghty of Nev and Town & Country for his advice on this). More tail lift and a soft rail that transitions to a hard rail later down the board. I have stuck with my proven flat areas and width. The mini-mal has a round pin tail. This minimizes the surface area of the tail and complements the tail V, giving greater control. The result is a fast board that goes well.
The classic longboard employs the same as above but with a smoother profile, yet a flatter bottom for more speed on those 2 foot summer days. The classic long board has returned to the traditional squashtail. This helps on rubbish days as the larger surface promotes speed. Now though it has a continuous curve that provides some of the drive of the pintail yet having extra lift to make the board turn better.
